Job Title Dispensary Pharmacy Assistant Employer Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Freeman Hospital Location Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Employment Type Part‑time, approximately 37 hours 30 minutes per week Job Summary Support the Pharmacy Team by dispensing medications, managing stock, handling controlled substances, and ensuring efficient operation of the dispensary across Freeman Hospital and, on occasion, Royal Victoria Infirmary. Work seven days a week on a rotational basis, including weekend work, weekday late duties and bank holidays. Key Responsibilities Provide technical support to dispensary services, carrying out routine procedures in ordering, distribution and storage of pharmaceutical stock. Undertake reception duties at the staff hatch, answer the dispensary telephone and ensure orders/prescriptions are entered on the prescription tracking system. Provide appropriate support to dispensary staff as required. Check off orders received into the dispensary in accordance with procedure. Replenish the Emergency Drug Cupboard and a variety of cardiac arrest boxes. Issue controlled drugs in response to written orders. Deliver drug bags to wards and departments throughout the hospital. Essential Criteria Knowledge of health and safety and hygiene in the workplace. Good basic education (e.g., GCSEs or equivalent) or relevant experience. Commitment to undertake an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services if not already achieved. Basic computer skills. Good organisational, accuracy and customer‑care skills. Demonstrate good oral and written communication. Desirable Criteria Knowledge of hospital pharmacy. Knowledge of drug names and differences in formulations / pack sizes. Experience of stock control and stock management. Previous experience in pharmacy. NVQ Level 2 in pharmacy services. Excellent oral and written communication skills (min. 4‑score). Other Requirements All references from current and previous employers covering a minimum of three years must be provided.
