Work location: Atlanta, GA. Responsibilities The Medical Interpreter is a representative of Emory Healthcare that uses knowledge and skills as a cultural broker and qualified medical interpreter. The Interpreter conveys another individual's thoughts and intentions while maintaining the integrity of the conversation, accurately transmits messages between non‑English speaking patients and healthcare providers, and supports personnel at EHC using consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes. The Interpreter reports directly to the Manager of Interpretation and Translation Services, remains thoroughly knowledgeable about and abides by EHC policies and procedures, and provides education and consultation to providers and patient/families on culturally specific values, beliefs, and practices. Rounds on patients as an advocate who shares the same language and culture, promotes adherence to care plans, and supports community health. The Interpreter acts as a cultural broker, bridging cultural barriers to reduce disparities, provides system‑wide and unit‑specific training on EMITS services, maintains patient confidentiality, converts dialogue, simplifies jargon, adheres to national standards and codes of ethics, and supports a positive workflow. The role also includes new employee orientation, mentoring, fast‑paced clinical support, remote interpretation services during downtimes, schedule coordination, inventory management of phones and iPads, equipment troubleshooting, and preparation of informational materials. This position may be physically demanding with frequent walking, standing, and at times emotionally challenging and stressful, requiring maturity, composure, and sound judgment. Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred. One year of medical interpreting experience. Fluency in English and Spanish (ability to speak, read, and write in both languages with emphasis on medical terminology). 40–60 hours of Medical Interpretation certification from Bridging the Gap or a similar institution preferred. Broad knowledge of medical terminology, culture, cultural humility and advocacy. Microsoft Office proficiency required.
