Base pay range $25.00/hr - $39.00/hr Job Description The Interpreter II coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services. Position Details This role will work Monday-Friday from 8:00-16:30. Despite the primary location for this position being Alta View, the incumbent may rotate to IMED if needed. Essential Functions Interprets medical and general information with the highest degree of accuracy in consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes for patients, families, and Intermountain Health staff, using appropriate communication methods according to the individual’s developmental age and mental condition. Interprets complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system. Acts as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills. Renders unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context. Adheres to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters, demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Manages time productively, displaying a proactive approach to the job. Responds to requests in a timely manner and provides staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments. Refers staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines. Uses computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry and other communication purposes within the work environment. Maintains accurate and complete records of all interpretation events. Ensures data across multiple platforms or sources is consistent and accurate. Translates written material into one of more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained. Completes assignments in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy. Acts a liaison between Language Services leadership and assigned units and clinics, managing relations with department managers and other leaders to assess needs and provide support and education. Encourages open and flexible communication with coworkers, hospital personnel and physicians to create a positive team environment and seamless service delivery. Trains and mentors interpreters and assists in the process of identifying, testing and training qualified bilingual staff. Assesses staff and supplier’s performance to ensure quality and adherence to Intermountain Policies and Procedures. Under the supervision of the department manager, collaborates with patient experience, compliance and other departments to research and report on safety and compliance events. Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s), achieving an "Advanced Professional Performance" or Level 4 in the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager), including specialized healthcare terminology. Performs consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation with a high degree of accuracy in both languages. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high-pressure environment. Demonstrate ability to prioritize and multitask. Demonstrate interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to function as part of a team and the flexibility and good judgement to work independently. Active national certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from either the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) is required. Preferred Qualifications Four years of experience working as a medical interpreter in healthcare settings. Bachelor’s Degree in Interpretation or Translation, Languages or Communications. In Utah: State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License by DOPL. Completion of a college-level medical terminology course. Knowledge of EPIC. Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with customers that require employee to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer, phone, and cable set‑up and use. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set‑up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
