• Radius Rule: This facility has a radius rule of 50 miles.

Med Surg (Medical Surgical) 2 years experience 

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Unit
Department: Medical Surgical
Schedule: 12-hour shifts (7-7); Days or Nights

Unit Information:

• Unit: Medical Surgical
• Number of Beds: 10 (can expand to 18)
• Nurse:Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4, average 1:5; may go up to 1:6 on rare occasions
• Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP
• Experience/Skills Required: 2 years of experience

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses:

• Age Range: Pediatrics to Geriatrics
• Conditions commonly treated:
  • Pneumonia, CHF, COPD
  • Post-surgical: Hysterectomy, Cholecystectomy (choles), Appendectomy (appys)
  • Pediatric conditions: Elevated bilirubin, asthma exacerbation
  • SWING bed patients (rehab care)

Clinical Details:

• Drips:
  • Rare titration required
  • Common drips: Insulin, antibiotics
• Charge Nurse:
  • Present on each shift
  • May take a 1:2 assignment
  • Travelers may serve as charge if experienced and extended
• Support Staff:
  • Nurse aids/patient care techs: 1:10 ratio
• Respiratory Therapy:
  • Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (home regimen), occasional high flow (no ventilators)
  • RT sets up and monitors
• Telemetry:
  • Remote telemetry tech support
  • RNs preferred to read strips
  • Current system: Spacelab (transitioning to Philips in May 2024)

Scheduling & Requirements:

• Shifts: 12-hour (7-7); manager creates schedule; effort made to block night shifts together
• Weekend Requirement: Minimum of 5 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Nights: Friday & Saturday
  • Days: Saturday or Sunday
• Holiday Requirement: Yes, if there is a staffing need
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating Requirements: May float to L&D or ED for helping hands
• Scrubs/Dress Code:
  • Any scrub color or pattern allowed
  • Scrubs provided, but not mandatory to wear
• Orientation: Two 12-hour shifts on the unit with a preceptor
